Finance is the New New Game
4.18.2025
Art Dubai

Delivered as part of Art Dubai’s talks program, Finance is the New New Game examined the entanglements between contemporary art and global financial systems. The presentation traced how speculative logics of markets intersect with artistic production, framing finance itself as a pervasive game that reshapes cultural and economic imaginaries.

As an editor of the Weird Economies journal, the work focused on shaping texts that explored “economic imaginaries” — speculative and critical approaches to value, labor, and exchange. Editing involved close collaboration with contributors, refining language while preserving the distinctiveness of diverse voices. The goal was to make complex or experimental writing accessible without diminishing its rigor, positioning the journal as a bridge between theory, artistic practice, and broader publics. Each piece invited readers to rethink how economies are narrated and to imagine alternatives beyond conventional frameworks.

Podcast Production
Exploits of Play

As producer of Exploits of Play, the podcast extension of Weird Economies, responsibilities included developing the conceptual arc, coordinating guests, and overseeing technical production. The season investigated games and play as both metaphors and mechanisms for understanding economic life, connecting themes of desire, labor, and social relations. Episodes combined dialogue, storytelling, and sound design to create an accessible entry point into complex theoretical ideas. The producer’s role was to guide the rhythm of conversation, balance scholarly and creative voices, and ensure that each episode carried both clarity and resonance.

Girlhood

New Fears Gallery, Berlin
Group Show

Girlhood was a group exhibition and art market that brought together emerging artists to explore themes of youth, identity, and femininity. Organized as both a cultural gathering and a site of solidarity, the event directed its proceeds toward supporting Palestine. The show combined visual works, performances and a community-driven marketplace, creating space for dialogue around art, politics, and collective care.

Working as a collective, Räume put on ambitious shows in unexpected places around Berlin. Our mission was to break open the barriers of exhibiting and so our shows were open call to artists and simply asked they present new works around our theme or location. Our largest show was during Berlin Art Week in 2022 where we took over part of the airstrip and building of Tegel Airport. As a goodbye to that era of the city. We were among the top shows listed for art week in spite of the location, which was also infamously a bad place to put an airport to begin with.

    Painting
    Florence Apartment no. 503, 2017
    183 x 107 cm
    Oil on canvas

A large oil painting depicts a dinner party in full revelry, with figures in the foreground rendered in vivid detail. As the eye moves upward, the forms gradually loosen, shifting into abstraction until only stick figures remain, dancing against the night sky. Depth is created through the compositional progression from the grounded realism of the lower figures to the dissolving silhouettes above, guiding viewers through layers of presence, memory, and imagination.

    Painting for print media
    Anxiety, 2017
    76 x 76 cm
    Oil on canvas

A smaller oil painting presents a close-up of a hand, its surface meticulously rendered. The focus rests on the nails, where subtle yet unmistakable signs of abuse are visible pooling in the nailbeds. Depth is achieved through tight framing and tonal contrast, drawing the viewer into an intimate encounter with vulnerability and resilience embodied in a single gesture.

    Mordançage
    Anxiety II, 2020
    210 x 297 mm prints
Darkroom-developed silver gelatin photographs with mordançage treatment

A series of darkroom-developed silver gelatin prints altered with the mordançage technique. The fragmented images of hands, distressed in both subject and surface, evoke the physical restlessness of anxiety. The chemical veils and lifted emulsion create textures of erosion and collapse, mirroring the way anxiety unsettles and distorts lived experience.

    Painting
My Year of Rest and Relaxation, 2019
    76 x 91 cm
    Oil on canvas

An oil painting completed after undergraduate study, reflects a period of transition into graphic design when painterly technique was applied toward commercial aims amid personal difficulty. Within a pink-walled box, oddly shaped cartoon-like figures engage in various activities, their playfulness unsettled by the presence of both a billboard and a crucifixion. Depth is constructed through the juxtaposition of whimsical forms and stark symbols, compressing humor and gravity into the same confined space.

    Sculpture Works
    Phaedo’s Hands, 2022
    Various dimensions, 91 cm plinth
Modeling clay, white paint, disassembled vaporizor parts

Phaedo’s Hands, adorns a pair of modeled hands with fragments of disassembled vape devices. The gesture recalls the “leaning hands” of ancient statuary, yet they are encumbered with contemporary mechanisms of dependence. This juxtaposition speaks to the enduring nature of craving and compulsion, drawing a direct line from Platonic meditations on the soul’s captivity to present-day technologies of addiction.
